GENERAL QUESTIONS
Q. Why should I take a street food tour in Hanoi?
A. Taking a food tour is the best way for travelers to become familiar with the local foods, customs and surroundings.
-
Most travelers are unaware that Northern Vietnamese food is different than Southern Vietnamese food due to the immigration flow during and after the Vietnam War, which is called the 'American War' over here. Therefore, you are probably only familiar with eating Southern VN food.
-
Hiring a local guide that is able to answer any questions that you might have about local customs, traditions, and of course, cultural do’s and dont's, is invaluable if you want to have a more enjoyable travel experience.
- A food tour is also a great way to learn what tastes and foods that you can confidently continue to eat as you expand your travels across Vietnam. Again, your guide will be able to answer questions, and also tell you where to find the best vendors who make a particular local food. They can also tell you which places that are overly touristy or that are over-hyped.
-
We will shower you with unnecessary gifts when you arrive, and at the conclusion of your tour, we will provide images and a 30 second tour recap video of your experience that were taken by your guide. Finally, we will pass along your tour routing through a google maps link so that you can easily return to any of the eateries that you visited on your tour for more of the best foods in Hanoi.

Q. Why should we tour with Curious About Vietnam?
A. We believe full-heartedly, that we provide a one-of-a-kind food tour experience in Hanoi's Old Quarter. Our founder (Ms. Yummyface) is obsessive about the details because she understands the expectations and needs to Western travelers. Everything has to be right... the presentation, the food quality & taste, and the overall experience. Her reputation depends on it.
-
The foods and small local vendors that you will visit have been personally curated by our founder Lylla, a.k.a 'Ms. Yummyface'. She has an impeccable palette, is an exceptional cook. We strictly avoid touristy eateries and areas.
-
Our guides are extremely well-trained, speak very good English, and each are incredibly proud to be cultural ambassadors of Hanoi and Vietnam.
-
Lylla lived in the USA and Europe before deciding to return home to create Vietnam food content in 2023. She fully understands Western fears, and expectations of cleanliness, and has personally trained each associate guide on our team.
-
Our guides are very well paid because we demand that they go above and beyond when serving, teaching and sharing the real Vietnam, with our guests. We also believe that paying a good wage, leads to happy team members.
-
After adding up what we spend on food, tour gifts and guide pay, our tour costs are actually higher than the retail price of most tour providers. Our goal is to be without question - the best food tour in Hanoi, and Vietnam.
-
You will also receive a small CAV tote bag upon arrival to carry your water and tour supplies (wet-wipes & tissue).
-
At the conclusion of your tour, your guide will also provide you with your tour routing so that you can easily find and revisit the eateries that you experienced on your tour.
-
Finally, you will receive a small but thoughtful departing gift before saying goodbye to your guide.
Q. What types of food tours do you offer?
A. We offer both group and private tours. Group tour sizes are limited to 7
curious eaters. Private tours can be any size and are designed specifically
do accommodate specific dietary requests, or needs.
Q. What do I need to bring?
A. Just your hungry self, and a good attitude. We will provide water,
wet-wipes, tissue, and a small gift bag to carry those items in.

Q. Do you provide a riding or scooter tours?
A. We do not.. Our focus is on premium street food experiences in Hanoi’s
famous Old Quarter. Out tours are very walkable with short journey's between
vendors. The walk is perfectly suitable for young kids, or older family members.

Q. How much walking will be involved?
A. The goal of every tour is to spend a large majority of our time sitting
and eating. The longest walk between vendors is only around 10 minutes.
The average walk is 3-4 minutes.
Q. What happens if it rains?
A. In the event of a shower, or rain, we usually purchase poncho’s for the
group and keep moving. If it gets super heavy, we can take shelter and wait it out in comfort. We are never too far from cover, in the Old Quarter.
Q. Do I get to take home any souvenirs from your tour?
A. Besides amazing memories, our guides are trained to take pictures and videos during your tour. At the conclusion of your tour, your guide will share the images with you, and then we will follow up with you a day or two after your trip to send along a personalized 30 second video recap of your food tour.
Q. Is a Train Street visit included on your food tours?
A. Unfortunately, it is not. We are committed to mouth-first adventure eating in the Old Quarter. Train Street is neither nearby, or provides great culinary experiences. Train Street should be done on your own time as train times can be inconsistent and finding a good seat means sitting and waiting for up to an hour. It is Lylla’s opinion that you can either eat good food, or you can do Train Street. Doing both is going to lead to an average experience for both due to the time constraints and location of Train Street, which is about a 15 minute walk from the heart of the Old Quarter. although we do understand the attraction and want to experience both at the same time.

FOOD QUESTIONS
Q. I want to have authentic street food experiences and avoid touristy spots. Is that possible?
A. That is our specialty. Our tour menu includes Hanoi & Northern Vietnamese specialties at some of the most ‘local’ small eateries in the Old Quarter. While it’s impossible to avoid all tourists, we guarantee that you won’t eat better tasting food, or have a more authentic street food experience in Hanoi.
Q. What can I expect to happen on your food tour?
A. To be brief, we will do everything humanly possible to make sure that you
experience new foods in a clean & safe environment. We will also explain and
show you how to eat the foods you will try on your tour. Along the way, we
will also share with you the inner workings of Hanoi and do our best to
explain how the Vietnamese culture exists in its past, and current form.
Q. Will we be eating any really strange or unpleasant foods on our tour?
A. No. We offer a menu that is void of bizarre foods. If you're looking for
a more adventurous food tour experience, you are more than welcome to
book a custom private tour with us instead.
Q. How many foods will we try?
A. Our group tours include around 8 stops, typically including 4-5 savory
foods, plus 1-2 snacks, 1-2 desserts, 1-2 drinks & coffee.
Q. Do I need to be worried about getting food poisoning?
A. Not at all. We have a saying that needs repeating to wary travelers. To have the absolute best eating experience in Vietnam, you need to turn off your mind, and open your mouth. We have provided tours to hundreds of guests and have yet to have a single food poisoning complaint. Our reputation depends on the health and happiness of our customers. Our guides are also intentionally over-trained to constantly maintain a clean and presentable dining area for each guest. They also use plastic gloves to handle all food. DO NOT drink, brush your teeth with, or ingest the local water, in any form - including freshly washed vegetables.
Q. How is food shared in a group tour setting?
A. An important cultural rule in Vietnam is that ‘no food goes to waste’. Local vendors can get annoyed if we don’t order enough food, but they get even more annoyed if we order too much food and it goes uneaten. It’s a delicate balance that we’ve had to learn how to successfully navigate, and that’s why we get preferential treatment almost everywhere we go, regardless of how busy it is. Our guides will split portions by hand (using plastic gloves) to ensure you receive a good amount of food and most importantly, a ‘perfect bite’ of everything that you try. You will not go hungry, but we encourage all of our guests to pace themselves so that they can enjoy every stop to their fullest. (Not that kind of fullest)
Q. Are your tours suitable for vegetarians?
A. Yes! There are vegetarian options at pretty much every stop on our group tours. Guests with strict dietary needs are encouraged to book a private tour as we can customize private tours to your dietary requirements.
Q. What if I have food allergies, or foods that I just don’t, or cannot eat? Can I still join a group tour and will I be taken care of?
A. Our guides are specifically trained to adjust to guests dietary needs as much as possible, even in a group setting. Guests with strict dietary needs are encouraged to book a private tour as we can customize private tours to your dietary requirements.
Q. Is there any beer drinking included on your tour?
A. A classic Bia Hoi experience 'beer stop' is included in both our morning and afternoon tours. You are more than welcome to enjoy more adult beverages along the way, although alcohol is not included in your tour cost.
Q. Is there a difference in the foods between the morning & afternoon tours?
A. In Vietnam, we don’t really have ‘breakfast foods’ like Western countries do. The foods you will get to try is very similar for either tour, with a couple of vendor changes due to restaurant hours.

Q. How much do your food tours cost? View Details & Options

Q. What is the advantage of booking a private tour over a group tour?
A. Private tours are closed to other guests so that your guide can be more focused on you and your guests.
-
They can also be somewhat customized to your dietary needs & wants. If you want to focus on noodle soups for example, we can do that.
-
Private tours can be confirmed 4 weeks in advance, instead of 2 weeks for group tours.
-
We highly encourage anyone who has food allergies or specific dietary needs to book a private tour.
Q. What are the differences between the 3hr and 4hr upgraded private tour?
A. Beyond the additional time, the main difference is that the 4hr tour also includes a stop at Lylla's favorite upscale restaurant to enjoy an iconic Hanoi specialty - Cha Ca. The 4hr upgraded tour also includes a hotel pick-up service, if you are staying in the Old Quarter vicinity. Your guide will meet you at your hotel and book a car(s) to your first tour stop.
Q. Why don’t you offer an evening tour?
A. A lot of the most interesting foods and best local vendors close shop by 6pm. The evening dining scene in the Old Quarter is more touristy and offers less interesting options. The morning and afternoon are the optimum times to enjoy the best the Hanoi has to offer.
Q. Can I make a special request for a custom start time if I book privately?
A. Yes, we can try to arrange a special start time for you if you are arriving too late to fit into our afternoon group or private tour.

RESERVATIONS & PAYMENT QUESTIONS

Enjoy Timeless Hanoi Flavored Scenes
Q. How early can I reserve a group or private tour?
A. We can make tentative reservations a year ahead of time for both types of tours.
Q. Can I reserve now and pay later?
A. YES, we encourage guests to reserve tour dates as early as possible so that we can save space for you ahead of last minute booking requests. We only require payment after your dates and tour time is confirmed. That is usually around 2 weeks before your tour date. Private tours can be confirmed around 4 weeks in advance.
Q. Can I pay cash at the conclusion of my tour?
A. Unfortunately, we cannot accept cash. We will send along a payment link when we confirm your tour date and start time. Payment can only be made by credit card. In unusual circumstances, we can also take payment through PayPal, or even with a QR code for Vietnamese citizens.
Q. Is tipping my guide expected or required?
A. In general, Vietnam is a non-tipping society, so it is not necessary to tip your guide. That being said, if they do an outstanding job, it is perfectly fine to offer them a tip.
KIDS & TODDLER QUESTIONS
Q. Are your tours suitable for children and are there any discounts available for them?
A. Kids are more than welcome to join our group tours and always end up having a great time, regardless of how finicky they are. We provide a 30% discount on kids under 8 years of age.
Q. Are infants able to be brought along on a food tour, and are strollers a good option for moving kids around?
A. Infants are welcome and free of charge if under the age of 3. We do NOT suggest pushing a stroller if carrying, or even walking is possible. The Old Quarter is renowned for its tight streets and busy sidewalks. We do suggest private tour bookings for travelers with children 3yrs or younger.
